What is Elastane?

Elastane is an elastic synthetic fiber regularly used in clothing and underwear. It is often combined with other fibers, such as cotton, polyester or nylon, to improve the textile's properties. Elastane is also known by the following names: spandex (especially in English-speaking countries), Lycra, Dorlastan and stretch.

How is elastane made?

Elastane is created by a chemical process. It starts by producing a liquid type of plastic called polyurethane (PUR). Through a sieve, they make long, thin threads. By immersing these in chemicals, they solidify. Then the threads are pulled through preheated rollers to make them more elastic. Finally, they are heated and cooled so that it remains structurally stable but elastic. The final product is a spool or balls of elastane that are ready to be processed into clothing, for example stretch jeans, T-shirts and shirts.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of elastane?

In addition to considerable stretchability, elastane also provides shape retention. This means that the fabric always returns to its original shape. As a result, stretch garments have a pleasant fit that moves smoothly with you. Furthermore, textiles with elastane are hard-wearing and quick-drying. Ideal for swimming and sportswear! On the other hand, stretch is less breathable than natural materials such as cotton or wool. Furthermore, elastane is sensitive to heat. So it is not wise to wash clothes with elastane at high temperatures. Due to the use of chemicals during production, elastane is not the most environmentally friendly material to wear.
