What is satin?
Satin is a weaving technique that creates soft, shiny and supple textiles. Because of its luxurious appearance and high wearing comfort, it is mainly used for formal shirts and ties. In men's suits, satin is sometimes used for the lapels of a jacket or for the details on a pantaloon.
How is satin made?
Mainly cotton, silk and polyester are used to produce satin. Instead of a traditional weave where the threads alternate over and under each other, satin has a more open weave structure. This means that the threads pass over several other threads before passing under one. The result is a smooth surface with a high-gloss finish.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of satin?
No matter what material you use, satin is silky smooth. Moreover, it is a durable fabric because of its high density of threads. It also contributes to its sophisticated look. Satin is a colorfast fabric, making your garments available in intense and vibrant colors. Its main disadvantage is that satin is not a breathable fabric, so the garment can feel clammy quickly. In addition, it is wrinkle-prone and wears out quickly if not cared for properly. It is therefore advisable to follow the instructions on the label.
